A new, disjunct, diplopod genus from Espirito Santo, Brasil (Polydesmida: Chelodesmidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Hoffman,Richard L..
The new generic and specific names Cryptosolenomeris macrogon are proposed for a large chelodesmoid milliped collected at Linhares, Espírito Santo, Brazil, and characterized particularly by the elongated gonotelopodites lacking torsion and apically recurved into a calyciform shield concealing the solenomere; the typical chelodesmoid prefemoral process appears to be either undeveloped or present in a disjunct position. There are no known close generic relatives in the known Brazilian fauna.

A new genus and two new species of Xustrostomatidae Hunt, 2002 (Nematoda: Rhigonematomorpha) from the West Indies Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
García,Nayla; Morffe,Jans.
A new genus and two new species of xustrostomatids (Nematoda: Xustrostomatidae) are described parasitizing diplopods from the West Indies. Trachyglossoides jimenoi gen. nov. sp. nov. from Cuba, is similar to Trachyglossus Hunt, 2002. It differs by having the female genital tract monodelphic, feature unique in the family. This constitutes the second record of the family from the country. Zalophora dominicana sp. nov. from the Dominican Republic resembles Z. repentina García & Morffe, 2010. It can be segregate by having a minor development of the cephalic crests and the cephalic end barely inflated. This constitutes the first record of the family and genus for the Dominican Republic.

Myriapods (Arthropoda, Myriapoda) in the Pantanal of Poconé, Mato Grosso, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Santos-Silva,Lorhaine; Golovatch,Sergei Ilyich; Pinheiro,Tamaris Gimenez; Chagas-Jr,Amazonas; Marques,Marinêz Isaac; Battirola,Leandro Dênis.
Abstract: The Brazilian Pantanal biome is one of the largest and most important floodplains in the world by virtue of its biodiversity and indispensable ecological services on local, regional, and global scales. Despite this importance, many gaps remain concerning its biodiversity as well as its generation and maintenance mechanisms. In view of expanding the information about its biological diversity, we compiled a list of Myriapoda (Arthropoda) species occurring in the Pantanal of Poconé, Mato Grosso, Brazil, based on the records from literature and on the specimens available in the zoological collections of Federal University of Mato Grosso -UFMT. A total of 33 Myriapoda species were recorded in the region. The Diplopoda species (20 spp.; 60.6%) are...

New genera for two poorly-known millipeds from Bahia (Polydesmida: Chelodesmidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Hoffman,Richard L..
Two chelodesmid millipeds described by Brölemann (1903) from the interior of Bahia have not been reported for over 100 years despite their large size and bright coloration. Originally described as Leptodesmus gounellei and Leptodesmus carminatus, neither species is referable to Leptodesmus as currently defined nor any other established genus. Both have been studied from the type specimens, and are here designated the type species of two new genera, Plectrogonodesmus for gounellei and Baianassa for carminatus. Diagnostic characters are illustrated for both taxa. Intergeneric relationships are at present not evident, and are not suggested pending better understanding of the chelodesmid fauna of eastern Brazil.

Production and efficiency of organic compost generated by millipede activity Ciência Rural
Antunes,Luiz Fernando de Sousa; Scoriza,Rafael Nogueira; Silva,Dione Galvão da; Correia,Maria Elizabeth Fernandes.
ABSTRACT: The putrefactive activity of organisms such as diplopods in the edaphic macrof auna can be leveraged to promote the transformation of agricultural and urban waste into a low-cost substrate for the production of vegetable seedlings. This research aimed to evaluate: (1) the quantity of Gervais millipedes ( Trigoniulus corallinus ) needed to produce an acceptable quantity of organic compost; (2) the main physical and chemical characteristics of different compost types; and (3) compost efficiency in the production of lettuce seedlings. The first experiment lasted 90 days and was conducted using 6.5L of Gliricidia, 6.5L of Flemingia, 13.5L of grass cuttings, 4.5L of cardboard, 4.5L of coconut husk, and 4.5L of corncob. Treatments consisting of 0,...

Vertical and time distribution of Diplopoda (Arthropoda: Myriapoda) in a monodominant forest in Pantanal of Mato Grosso, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Battirola,Leandro D.; Marques,Marinêz I.; Rosado-Neto,Germano H.; Pinheiro,Tamaris G.; Pinho,Nelsina G. C..
In this study different sampling techniques for Diplopoda in soil, tree trunks and canopies were applied in an integrated way in the northern region of the Pantanal of Mato Grosso, Brazil. This was done in order to assess the relationship within the fauna in each forest strata, as well as its richness and temporal distribution. In all these habitats there were a total of 1,354 diplopods, distributed in four taxonomic orders, with Polyxenida being predominant over Polydesmida, Spirostreptida and Spirobolida. The largest representation was found on the trunks of the Vochysia divergens (721 ind.), intercepted by tree photoecletors, whereas in the canopies sampling reached only 65 specimens. In the edaphic stratum 568 diplopods were captured, most with the use...
